Scythe have never shied away from manufacturing large CPU coolers and by looking at their latest offering, the Orochi, this trend is set to continue!

The new Orochi stands a massive 155mm tall and 120mm wide and that’s before you install the fan! This may cause issues regarding compatibility with certain cases, but if your case is wider than 190mm this should not be a problem. All of the cases available from Quiet PC will be able to accommodate the Orochi. To help you decide if the cooler is suitable we have provided an image with some important dimensions here.

As you can see from the images the Orochi incorporates ten 6mm diameter heatpipes which transfer the heat away from the CPU and onto the cooling fins. The cooling fins are spaced wide apart, to not only reduce the overall weight of the cooler but to also allow the heatsink to be used without a fan. This does depend on the airflow through your case and the CPU type you are using. If you get this right then it may be possible to use the Orochi without a fan at all!

The Orochi has been designed for one purpose alone and that is to cool any current CPU in virtual silence. The supplied 140 mm fan only produces a noise level of 11dB(A). This means you will have to place you ear next to it to be able to hear it. This is why Scythe market the cooler as being "The ultimate fanless cooler, designed for total silence". OK, it isn’t silent because it uses a fan! But in real life you will not be able to hear it over the ambient noise level the location of the PC.

The above is great news if you want total silence, but what if you want more performance rather than noise reduction! Well, what’s special about the 140mm fan is that its mounting holes are the same as a 120mm fan. This make it is possible to use any 120mm fan with the Orochi heatsink. So if you want a little more airflow, feel free to exchange the supplied with an alternative.

From a motherboard compatibility point of view, the Orochi is supplied with mounting fittings for Intel’s LGA775 and socket 478 and AMD’s AM2, AM2+ and socket 939/940/754.
